Then there’s the Interislander or Bluebridge ferry crossing from Wellington to Picton, which adds about 3.5 hours of sailing time (plus check-in and loading, so closer to 5 hours total). From Picton down to Christchurch, you’re looking at another 4 to 5 hours by road.
Add it all up, and the travel portion alone comes to roughly 18 to 20 hours of actual moving time. That doesn’t include rest breaks, fuel stops, or overnight stays.
So, How Many Days Should You Plan For?
For most household moves, the realistic answer is 2 to 3 days from pickup to delivery.
Day One: Loading and the Drive South
The movers load up your belongings in Auckland and head south to Wellington. Depending on when loading finishes, the truck may reach Wellington that evening or need to stop along the way.
Day Two: The Crossing and Final Stretch
The ferry crossing eats up a good chunk of the second day. Once the truck rolls out of Picton, the drive to Christchurch takes up the rest of the afternoon. If the ferry booking lines up well and conditions are good, delivery can happen late on day two. Otherwise, it rolls into the morning of day three.

Weather plays a part as well. Cook Strait crossings get cancelled or delayed when conditions turn rough, and that’s common. A cancelled sailing can push your delivery back by half a day or more.
The volume of stuff being moved matters too. A one-bedroom flat takes far less time to load and unload than a four-bedroom family home with a garage full of furniture. More items mean more time on both ends.
Road conditions through the central North Island and over the passes south of Blenheim can also factor in, particularly during winter.
